Elvis Presley died 36 years ago today (i.e. August 16, 1977)

Here we are 36 years sadly and those of us who mourned those heated August days in 1977 will never forget them and we questioned “how could this be”?

Even though he was over 40, and in declining health, there were times during 75, 76 and even 77 when he was not over bloated and still had that…magic. His incredible voice caused you to look past the weight, the paleness, the tiresome burdens he was carrying and as we hung on his voice we were transported back to a better time – when lasting memories were formed – and we embraced his live performances never thinking that 1977 would be his last.

My heart goes out to Elvis family members, the Memphis Mafia (i.e. Marty Lacker, Billy Smith, Red West, Sonny West, Jerry Schilling, Joe Esposito) and their family members, Kathy Westmoreland, Sandi Pichon, Sandie Stevens, and others as this day (not to minimize others) truly must be…hard.

When you peel back the sideburns, the hair, the elaborate suits, the screaming fans, the worldwide fame, you are left with an exceptional man (though imperfect in many ways) who made mistakes – had a temper – and yet was the American Dream personified. However, he failed at what meant the most to him and that was being a husband, raising his daughter together as man and wife, and to grow old with his mother. He failed because he was human and as humans events are “out of our hands”. He carried on, after these life changing events, and held his head high – put on a brave face – and sang to the world. I applaud him for doing so.

August 16th is just a day.

August 16th, 1977 was the final day in a life of a man who is deserving of our remembrance and respect.

Hence, the reason for this article.

Take care and may God bless you all.

Getting to know Elvis Presley

GRACELAND n golf cart

Getting to know Elvis Presley by Jeff Schrembs 2013 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

Elvis.

His name “triggers” a flood of emotions, memories, thoughts, that is…never-ending.

Elvis was the GREATEST Entertainer who ever lived…period. Elvis was the GREATEST Singer. Elvis was the most successful Hollywood Movie Star…ever (every one of Elvis’ movies made money and no other “actor/actress” can make the same claim).

Elvis was the GREATEST Gospel Performer…ever. When Elvis was on TV (i.e. Milton Berle, Ed Sullivan, Comeback Special, Aloha from Hawaii, etc.) he was the RATINGS KING! Elvis was the CONCERT SELL OUT KING of all time from 1969 through 1977. NO ONE will ever touch Elvis’ Concert attendance records…ever!

Elvis had style, swagger, desire to reach out of his “monetary challenged” existence and use the ONE “tool” that he could count on for success…himself. Elvis wanted to provide for his Mother and man he looked the part, acted the part, played the part, and just flat out BLEW everyone away onstage, and was just as “exciting” offstage.

Elvis was a loving son, husband, father, and a wonderful friend who gave of himself as he truly cared.

Elvis was gifted by God with a face, stance, physical presence, that was COMMANDING and there was NO ONE who looked like him before, then, after, now, as he was similar to a “Greek god statute” with the physical prowess of a Tiger.

If Elvis wanted it…he got it. He absorbed it. He turned it inside out and outside in. He read, he asked questions, he prayed, he kept a dialog with his Mother (after her passing) as well as to his twin brother (who died at birth) and he constantly questioned WHY did God allow him such success?

WOW not many people realize/know how HUMBLE a person Elvis was and it was NOT an act. Yeah, sure he could/would “yes mam” and be very respectful and some people (like you Geraldo Rivera give Elvis his PROPS!) thought it was an “act”…but it was as real as that perfectly defined nose and that jet black hair and those grey-blue-auburn colored eyes that Elvis had.

Elvis was the HIGHEST PAID ENTERTAINER for the majority of his life, excluding when he was mandated to complete the “movie contracts” that went from (approximately) 1961-1968, in a time when the HIGHEST income tax bracket was 90% (which is UNHEARD of today).

Elvis always took care, monetarily, of those within his “inner circle”. Elvis would, and did, give away TENS OF THOUSANDS of dollars every year to Charities in Memphis. Elvis not only paid his “inner circle” but he took care of their expenses/food/etc. If you were “in” with Elvis…you were in.

Most of the Memphis Mafia, as Elvis’ “inner circle” were called, were men. However, there was one SPECIAL lady named Patty Perry who was very much in Elvis’ “inner circle”.

There is no doubt that each of these individuals (truly) cared for Elvis. There is also no doubt that, beginning in late 1971, Elvis had some health issues that needed to be addressed.

Many of the “inner circle” tried to provide Elvis with “good advice/options”, concerning his health issues, and sometimes the advice was given “face to face” and just before Elvis died it was released in a book entitled “Elvis what happened?”

There is NO DOUBT that Elvis’ health declined, with a few good months here and there, beginning in late 1971 but really began to deteriorate in 1976 and went FULL FORCE deterioration in 1977. No one can put themselves in his “shoes” as that man (literally) felt like he had the World to carry. He had to make money so he had to perform. He could not eat right, sleep well, go to the bathroom well/often, he had stomach issues, reactions, digestive problems, and (among other things) an enlarged heart.

Elvis continued on performing NOT because he necessarily wanted to (note: in fairness Elvis loved to perform but we are talking about 200 shows a year for a man over the age of 40) but he HAD to

I am NOT a “doctor” but based up all of the “insiders” books, articles, interviews, products that I have read for OVER 40 years now (and continue to read vicariously daily) I believe that Elvis was predisposed for Depression and/or “great highs” and/or “great lows”.

Elvis was allergic to Penicillin and on one occasion he was accidently given Penicillin and had a reaction and almost died. During his time Penicillin was the NUMBER 1 drug to fight infections for most of America…except Elvis and others who had the bad reactions. Elvis had a MAJOR sleeping disorder and had to take medication to even TRY to get some sleep. Elvis’ natural body was ALWAYS moving and ready to go. Elvis stayed up until the sun came up and went to bed and slept until late afternoon – sometimes Elvis would sleep for days and stay in his bedroom.

One FACT stayed with Elvis ever since he was a little boy and that was that he would not outlive his Mother’s age. Elvis often talked about that during his lifetime and several times PRIOR to his Mothers passing.

Elvis TRULY BELIEVED, in his heart and soul, that it was inevitable. When Elvis’ Mother died Elvis believed that she was 42 years old. Factually she was 46 years old and she had kept her true age from Elvis all of his life. Therefore Elvis, going into 1977, knew that the first month of 1977 (January) he would in fact turn 42 (1/8/77). We can only imagine how that REALITY played in Elvis’ head and in his attitude and in his decisions.

Elvis was a COLLECTOR of fine/unique items: clothes, cars, jewelry, shoes, horses, furniture, buses, motorcycles, 3wheelers, etc. Elvis also owned the FIRST “cell phone” (we have a photo of it and it is encased into a wooden box but it worked). Elvis also owned the FIRST VHS player (we have a photo of it as well that we took in 1977) here in the United States. If it was “cool”, cutting edge, etc. then Elvis would get it.

Elvis had a PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY. Elvis also had a great ability to put his thoughts down on paper including designing things. Elvis was a “multi-faceted” man who was multi-talented and a giving caring human being.

Elvis was the MOST PHOTOGRAPHED person who ever lived. Elvis was also the MOST PRODUCT FRIENDLY Entertainer of his time meaning that you could get an Elvis doll, lunchbox, shirt, hat, coat, shoes, etc. Thus there are MANY MANY Elvis Collectibles (we define as Elvis items made AFTER his death of August 16, 1977) and Elvis Memorabilia (we define as Elvis items made during his lifetime of January 8, 1935 until August 16, 1977).

Take care and may God bless you.

An open letter to Lisa Marie August 17, 2012 (from Jeff Schrembs)

August 17, 2012

Dear Lisa Marie:

35 years ago, and 1 day, you lost your Father and no one will ever know the pains you have had to endure/bear all these years.

Throughout the years I have seen a constant division between certain family members, and members of the Memphis Mafia, and EPE. This was a topic and I routinely discussed with my friend, who (sadly) died before his time, Todd Morgan who rose through the ranks at EPE. I would never disclose the specifics of our conversations but he respected my opinion as I did his.

Over the past few years we have lost so many of those who Elvis; loved, worked with, befriended, trusted, etc. With each passing day the remaining members of the Memphis Mafia, as we all do, grow older and the loss of their friend (i.e. Elvis Presley) never…diminishes. There is no doubt that they, individually and collectively, loved Elvis and carry with them regrets.

I have always believed that events in ones’ life, or a series of events, should ALWAYS be put in context. That people can disagree and yet respect one another. That loving, and caring for, our “fellow man” is not just applicable to those nearby or that we are related to or that ended up on the right side of a position. I have had the utmost respect for Elvis’ charitable endeavors and I am proud to know that you, Lisa Marie, have carried on with giving of your time – your heart – and monetarily.

I ask you now, Lisa Marie and EPE, to please consider that (literally) millions of Elvis Fans Worldwide would like, as would I, to see each member of the Memphis Mafia (i.e. Marty Lacker, Billy Smith, Red West, Sonny West, and each member of their immediate family, etc.) formally recognized – appreciated – respected – and embraced by you and EPE. I ask this not because of any “gain” on my part but that time is never guaranteed and that there needs to be true healing between the parties (publicly and privately).

I wish that you never had to grow up without your Father. I wish that God had granted Elvis more time so that he truly knew how much he meant to all of us…and future generations. That he was given time to heal (physically, mentally, emotionally, etc.). That he was able to spend more time with you. That he was given the respect, and appreciation, he earned and deserved from the “critics” and “award nominating agencies”.

Some of my most cherished photos, of your Father, is not him onstage but reaching out to hold a child – visiting children in a hospital – bringing a little blind girl onstage – smiling while hugging a child with cancer – and/or kissing an elderly woman and thus bringing an immediate smile to her face. These “acts of kindness” come from the heart and Elvis had, among other things, a huge heart and the world was better off for it. I have always stated that there is honor in kindness – honor in forgiveness – and honor in giving others another chance. In accordance with these genuine gestures I now have authored this open letter to you.

I have lived long enough to know the beauty of a simple gesture and that small steps can lead to honest dialog and communication. This is what I hope, and wish, for…now.

In closing, I will continue to wish you, EPE, and each of your family members nothing but happiness and success in all of your endeavors.

Take care and may God bless you.

Memphis Mafia Members August 16, 2011 (by Jeff Schrembs All Rights Reserved)

August 16, 2011 will (sadly) be the 34th year since Elvis’ passing. Inasmuch as Elvis Presley Fans Worldwide will travel to Memphis and/or acknowledge this date on a personal level (including online) I wanted to take this moment to reach out to those who Elvis loved, trusted, respected, and (most of all) chose to spend his time with….each member of the “Memphis Mafia” (and to their family members as well).

To: Marty Lacker, Billy Smith, Joe Esposito, Jerry Schilling, Red West, Sonny West, etc. (aka: each and every member of the Memphis Mafia), and to each of their family members, I just wanted to say;

1. THANK YOU for all of your efforts while Elvis was alive and each day afterward.

2. THANK YOU for all of your time that you have spent correcting the record about Elvis and for “calling it as you see/know it”.

3. THANK YOU for caring so much about Elvis and standing with him during his lifetime.

4. THANK YOU for your endeavors (both personal and professional).

5. THANK YOU for keeping so many memories and posessions with you (i.e. not made public)…where they belong.

August 16th of every year, like most days I am sure, must be “difficult” to say the least. It remains my hope that with each passing year fans will reach out and join me in saying their hearfelt THANKS. You are living breathing priceless irreplacable men who share a bond that will never be broken.

As an Elvis Presley Fan, these (approximately) six decades, I respect and appreciate each of you…and always will.

Take care and may God bless you and your family members now…and always.

Elvis Presley latest Mr. Potato Head? (by Jeffrey Schrembs)

(note: As Jeff Schrembs continues to deal with medical complications this article has been published by his family with his permission 2010 All Rights Reserved).

Elvis Aron Presley. Son, Father, King of Rock and Roll, Greatest Entertainer who ever lived, Sold more records than anyone in musical history, Played to more sold out audience members than anyone in musical history, Husband, Friend, provider, contributor to many charities, Actor, etc. Each of these terms provokes a “truth” about Elvis. But now, due to the aggressive marketing that has continued since Elvis’ passing, we will soon see the first of (2) two “Mr. Potato Head Elvis Presley”.

IF the intent of this “toy” is to introduce future generations to inquire about “who/what” Elvis was then, and only then, could I see the “merits” of this. However, over the years for many reasons Elvis has been “characterized” and/or “minimized” into something “unreal”. As an Elvis Presley Historian, Collector, etc. anything that does not accurately reflect Elvis’ body of work (i.e. his recordings approved by him, his movies, his live appearances, his TV appearances, his Concerts, etc.) should not be acknowledged/celebrated nor the “stereotypes” advanced (i.e. I will not give merit to all of the useless and hurtful things written/said about Elvis). There is enough of Elvis “lifetime body of work” that has not gotten enough “press/play/promotion” and now the most MAGNIFICENT Entertainer who ever lived, with a powerful range of vocal abilities over 3 decades, is reduced to…Mr. Potato Head?

I fully understand that there needs to be ways to keep Elvis “front and center” but I have stated, and will continue to do so until I leave this World, that (as an example) the Estate find a FORMAL and PERMANENT place for the Members of the Memphis Mafia (specifically Marty Lacker, Red West, Sonny West, Lamar Fike, Billy Smith, etc.) so that (a) their stories can be told (b) their role in Elvis’ life respected/appreciated/supported (c) they and their families can monetarily benefit from their, in some cases, THREE DECADES of working with Elvis and being among his closest friends and (d) so that their is REAL HEALING and RESPECT afforded these men so that Elvis Fans Worldwide can see the Estate and these men “together” on a mutually rewarding/respectful basis. When I think about this I ask “What would Elvis want”? Would Elvis have wanted to become a Mr. Potato Head? Would Elvis had wanted to have the Memphis Mafia, and their family members, proved for – their stories heard – their place in History assured – and allow them to participate and given their rightful place of dignity front and center for Elvis Fans Worldwide?

There is no doubt that these “potato heads” will sell and those involved will make money BUT when does it end? Why can’t the EMPHASIS be on, as an example, getting Elvis plague restored on the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor (note: in full disclosure we have collected OVER 100,000 email “signatures” voluntarily from Elvis Presley Fans Worldwide courtesy of Mr. Jeff Schrembs who was working on formally advocating on this issue and his intent is to follow up on this matter when medically able)? How about mandating that ALL of Elvis’ record sales be updated correctly? How about going after the MANY false and malicious Elvis “Websites” that monetarily benefit in unscrupulous ways? How about doing a WORLDWIDE PROMOTION, from Priscilla/Lisa Marie/Memphis Mafia, asking Elvis Fans Worldwide to compile a DEFINITIVE audio/video/photographically record of Elvis whereby Fans “allow” (i.e. not give up their ownership rights) photos to be shown OR videos that were taken at Concerts to be “enhanced” using modern technology so that Elvis Fans Worldwide can see more than Elvis in 68, Aloha from Hawaii, or 1977 CBS Concert? I have many more “ideas” what would keep Elvis “front and center”, make money for all involved, allow for respectful input, AND get Elvis Fans Worldwide (now and in the future) excited about what Elvis did WHEN HE WAS ALIVE and not some “plastic” one dimensional colored pieces that can be put together and taken apart in 2 minutes (no disrespect to Mr. Potato Head intended).

The reality is that (sadly) time is passing us all by. We have “lost” so many of those who Elvis loved, shared his life with, shared his hopes/dreams with, and Elvis truly cared about. I firmly believe that the reason why Elvis is so prevalent in 2010 is that so many Elvis Fans are still alive who supported Elvis, thorough Fan Clubs/Concerts/etc., and collected “anything/everything Elvis” for so many years. Perhaps two decades remain before the last Elvis Fans, who saw him perform live as adults, leaves this Earth taking with them precious memories/footage/photographs/etc. with them. Isn’t there a place for them? If not now, when?

I have collected (literally) countless Elvis Presley items for (approximately) fifty years now. I have cataloged over 100,000 (yes, ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND) Elvis Photographs. I can’t recall everything I have collected about Elvis Presley so when I go through my collection I am consistently “surprised” to hold in my hand something that “captured” Elvis (i.e. photo, video, etc.) for that moment. Each item brings back memories that can never ever be duplicated. Much of my collection will never “see light of day” outside of my designated family members, and I know many other collectors who would never sell their video footage or allow it to be on the “internet” because it will get duplicated, so how many hours/days/weeks/months/years of Elvis footage/video/audio/photographs are out there (i.e. Worldwide) that could be put into a format that benefits everyone?

Elvis Presley was among the FIRST celebrities to sign an “endorsement deal” for shoes/dolls/etc. Some items were worth collecting and some…not. Sometimes in life QUALITY should “triumph” QUANTITY and it is this mans opinion that this “rule” should apply to items “representing Elvis” now. Even though I am confident that this “Elvis Presley Potato Head” will be a well made, interesting, and desired item I would prefer that it be a “part” of the “Elvis Presley Story” and that his music – movies – concerts – tv appearances/etc. – be made readily available and “front and center”.

Thank you to every Elvis Presley Fan, Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie Presley, Jack Soden, EPE, Marty Lacker, Red West, Sonny West, Lamar Fike, Billy Smith, Joe Esposito, Jerry Schilling, and to their family members for their contributions to Elvis’ life/legacy. Elvis Fans Worldwide would love it to see these respected individuals “come together formally” in our lifetime. If not, then the true story of Elvis Presley (along with his greatness onstage and his life offstage) will be fractured. It is long past time for this to occur and it is NEVER too late to “right a wrong” and I know that MILLIONS of Elvis Fans Worldwide feel the same way I do.

Take care and God bless every child born into this World and to those yet to be born.
